Ego of the Week
Northern Paladins - M. Bison
"Alone in the wind with fire and steel
they ended their quest on this enchanted field
They have the approval of immortal power
A rash, valiant knight, a brave brotherhood
So fearless and rude yet cautious and bold
They walk on 'the desert between your ears'"

-- Northern Paladins by Olli Hurskainen

DanteDante of NP argues with Syrus from MTV's Real World over who's better: Civil or Street Fighters.

An impressive string of victories in Champions of Myth and The Blood Tournament (for the record orchestrated and run by Northern Paladins) have put the Scandinavian team Northern Paladins on the Myth map. An impressive run in Myth World Cup 2000 and National League Myth 2 proved the Northern Paladins could hang with the better teams...but what exactly but them over the hump and transformed them from contender to champion?

Regardless of how the Northern Paladins reached this point, one thing is certain--they have enough ego for all the other Myth teams combined. The Northern Paladins already profess that they're the best Myth team ever after only two tournament victories, only a third of civil's team tourney victories (6) and just matching civil's other incarnation Street Fighters (2) and Men of Rohan (2). Certain the Northern Paladins have a place among the best teams...but best ever?

Clash of steel on the fields of green echoes in the wind
You will see through the mist and steam
witnessing a triumph of the kings

On the fields of victory we stand alone
and revive our ancestors' pride
We heed their legacy into the night
and the flames of fire and lightning rise
in the Northern Paladins' eyes

JushiusJushius of NP when he hears the phrase 'double-entering'
Back to our main point...what transformed the Northern Paladins from contender to champion? What was different about their simply contender play in Myth World Cup 2000 to their champion play in Champions of Myth and The Blood Tournament.  Two words: blatant cheating.

Evidence:

1) On the now-defunct forum on the TWF homepage, RedPhoenix is revealed to have played for both Northern Paladin and on Simpsonz and/or Sesame Studs.  Many say Simpsonz and Sesame Studs were basically the same teams.

2) On a now-defunct forum on the TWF homepage, Zaramis and "other NP" are revealed to have double-entered in Champions of Myth. While it may seem a minor infraction to some, it's much easier to win a tourney when you possess multiple teams in a single tournament.

3) It was revealed that RedPhoenix played on Northern Paladins and Old Skool Wankerz in National League Myth 2.

4) It is rumored (according to two high profile Myth players) that a former Glue the Moose player double-entered onto the Northern Paladins for their playoff match against Glue the Moose.

5) Chickenwire and Jushius concocted a plan to force everyone to play Stalk on the Borderlands (a map they inserted secret 8 types of artillery on the same mesh) in The Blood Tournament but broke down under the community's pressure.

6) The Northern Paladins secretly distribute their theme song "Northern Paladins" by Olli Hurskainen to  their Myth opponents' mp3 players, which causes clouded vision, stomach cramps, and ear bleeding.

We'll dance on your grave, the last on the hill
alone in the night on the still battlefield
We live by the laws of our ancient dominion
Our fathers behind our lineage and blood
Their deeds and their power are deep in my heart
We fight and we proudly hail from our kingdom

-- Northern Paladins by Olli Hurskainen

Judge Mills LaneJudge Mills Lane agrees: NP are Ego of
        the Week.
With the release of Myth: The Total Codex dummy accounts, double-entering, and fake teams became all the rage. It's probably impossible to protect a tournament from nefarious players, such as those that infest the Northern Paladins. I mean, even Monk (ex-evil inc, ex-BMF, ex-z0r, ex-some other stuff) had like 37 dummy accounts until his mom caught him viewing gift.jpg.

Remember, as Ashen learned in Clan MacGaming's Clash of Titans, winning a tournament doesn't make the grass grow greener, improve your grades, get mom and dad off your back, provide a job that earns more than 5 dollars an hour, or give you a girlfriend that doesn't look like the kid in school that always looks dirty or smelly.

Plus, it's hard to brag as the best ever when you're losing to ROOF.  No offense ROOF, probably a bunch of swell guys, but not exactly striking fear into the heart of MWC2K1. This is the team so desperate for ego stroking that they named their Champions of Myth winning films "NpvsCivil.zip."

So, are the double-entering egos that make up the Northern Paladins the "greatest" Myth team ever, as so often said by their apparently modest members?  Not quite.  There's only one person around with the clout to even attempt to place the best Myth teams ever in their respective place in history. That person is me.

Best Myth II Teams Ever

1. Civil Order / Street Fighters (beginning of Myth II to MWC2K) - I'm biased but 8 straight team tourney wins means we own YAZ AZZ.

2. BMF (beginning of Myth II to MWC99) - Good showing in MWC99 and took part in
the "Best Match Ever" in its sudden death versus Civil. A shell of its former
self since MWC99, however. Without its leader, My modem is on Fire, BMF lacked
the dedication and commitment to consistent success. Just look at its MWC2K films
for evidence of this.

3. Men of Rohan (just before MWC2K to NML2) - A string of strong performances changed the Men of Rohan drastically - this is the same team that got annihilated by Civil like 88-6 in MWC99? Hardly. A couple tourney victories place Men of Rohan high on the list.

4. Glue the Moose (MWC99 and sporadically thereafter) - An excellent power team with excellent light and dark skills. Facing off against Glue the Moose required much preparation for the unexpected.

JulieJulie from MTV's Real World says E. Honda was her favorite player on the Street Fighters.
5. The Spanish Inquisition (NML to MWC2K) - A highly polished team that could defeat any of the top six when prepared and patient. Personal note: the team that provided my worst team match loss ever, a 13-12 loss on DE Terries in MWC2K.

6. Northern Paladins (post-MWC2K to TBT) - As much as it pains me, two victories puts NP high on the list despite their numerous infractions.  If NP could stop double-entering for five minutes, they might earn some M2SBR. Take this placing as follows: when not double entering (#6) when double-entering (#9183).  This team did lose a game to ROOF after all.

7. The Companions (beginning of Myth II to MWC99) - The Return... 1%... More jokes about these guys than Myth 2 tourney wins (well, zero) but still a formidable team for several months.

8. The Wight Foundation (Sporadic) - Inconsistent but tough when prepared.

9. Foundation of Stoneheim (MLM2 to MWC2K) - A challenge when prepared and offered some surprises in the MWC2K final match.

10. evil Inc. (beginning of Myth 2 to MLM) - What happened to these guys? Barely hanging on the list after numerous terrible showings. Several members could be the focus of their own Ego of the Week article.

11. Ninth Circle of Hell (NML2) - Hey, they were the only team to ever eliminate us from a tournament. Post-excuses aside, this makes 9CoH deserving on the list.

M. BISON *SF* STREET FIGHTERS ON YAZ AZZ
A-left-Z-Z-right-up-Z: *PSYCHO EGO CRUSHER*

"MBison's post was factual, descriptive, concerned a subject of interest to every MWC player ("on topic"), and without profanity or crudity. The mediocrities out there could respond with "flames," but the message itself was no "flame" nor was it an incitement to anything but to reconsider what "prestige" really amounts to in this game.  -- Poohbear '00
